2009 CEP PhD Studentship: Ethical Philosophy, Durham University, England

CEP is a research centre set up to develop ethical philosophy, an original approach which uses participatory methods to give priority to the perspective of the done-to or victim, rather than that of the agent or bystander. See http://www.dur.ac.uk/cep/

The CEP PhD Student will be registered at Durham University and based in the Philosophy Department with Soran Reader as their lead supervisor. They will develop inter-disciplinary links and research networks at Durham University and beyond. Because CEP is committed to participation, they will also make links with the non-academic community, helping to show how moral philosophy can be accessible and helpful.

The Studentship may be held full- or part-time, and is equivalent in value to an AHRC Doctoral Award (currently £3,390 fees + £13,200 maintenance full-time, part-time pro rata), plus a £1,000 research support grant. To help us expand opportunities at CEP, applicants are expected to apply to suitable sources (e.g. AHRC) for funding, and to agree to use that in place
of CEP funds if successful. Candidates without formal postgraduate training will be considered if they can show evidence of sustained experience beyond first degree level that is specifically relevant to their proposed research.

Fellowships: Asia Pacific Leadership Program

Summary: The East-West Center is pleased to announce new fellowships for the Asia Pacific Leadership Program for 2009-10.

Eligibility: The Asia Pacific Leadership Program seeks outstanding individuals with proven leadership experience or high leadership potential from across the Asia Pacific region, North America and beyond. All participants have at least a Bachelors degree with the majority having graduate degrees as well. At least 20 countries are represented in each cohort. APLP Fellows come together from all walks of life, including areas as diverse as government, business, NGOs, health sciences, media, monastic orders, and education.

The APLP is a graduate certificate program combining the development of regional expertise with the enhancement of individual leadership capacity. PhD Scholarships: Philosophy and Politics of Recognition, Sydney and Belfast

Summary: Two parallel PhD studentships are available from Queen's University Belfast and Macquarie University in Sydney for research projects in the Philosophy and Politics of Recognition. The projects will use recognition theory, as it has been developed in recent strands of philosophy and critical social theory, to explore some significant aspect of contemporary
political life.

Timeline: Closing Date: 31 October 2008

Eligibility: The scholarships are available to domestic (UK and Australian) and international students. Applicants should have equivalent qualifications to a UK Masters degree or an Australian undergraduate degree with first class honours in a relevant discipline.



The successful candidates will enrol as PhD students at both Queen's and Macquarie under the terms of a co-tutelle agreement between the institutions.

The scholarships pay a living allowance, currently £12,600 in UK and $20,007 (tax exempt) in Australia per annum, for a tenure of 3 years full time (with a 6 month extension possible in Australia), subject to satisfactory progress. Tuition fees will also be funded for the scholarship tenure. Additional support for projects and for national and international travel will be available. Summary: The Department of Philosophy at the University of Otago is seeking a PhD candidate to work with Professor Peter Anstey on the topic ‘Francis Bacon and the Experimental Philosophy’ or a related topic.

Visiting Fellowships: The Sydney Centre for the Foundations of Science

Summary: We are currently inviting applications for one-semester visiting fellowships at The University of Sydney, for either second semester 2009 or first semester 2010. This program is associated with The Sydney Centre for the Foundations of Science (SCFS), a new centre sponsoring research into the logical, philosophical and historical foundations of science and medicine (further details below).

Timeline: The deadline for application is December 8th, 2008.

Eligibility: We are hoping to receive applications from leading historians and philosophers of science (including the special sciences and medicine) at any career stage. This is the third round of such fellowships and we anticipate being able to offer such fellowships each year.




It is expected that there will be up to four fellowships per year, and each fellowship will come with a stipend of up to AUD 6,000. These fellowships will provide opportunities for academics on sabbatical from their home institution to spend a semester in an productive and collegial research environment (in a beautiful city), to work with members of the SCFS and with other visiting fellows. The stipend is to help offset some of the travelling and living-away-from-home expenses. The successful applicants will be expected to work on a specific research project that is of interest to members of the SCFS. One of the aims of the SCFS is to strengthen international links in history and philosophy of science, so expressions of interest from researchers outside Australia are particularly encouraged.

Summary: The Philippine-American Education Foundation (PAEF-Fulbright) is inviting potential and interested qualified professionals and faculty to turn in their complete applications for Advanced Research and/or University Lecturing projects in the United States for academic year 2009-2010 on or before October 13, 2008.

Eligibility: Eligible fields are those related to Philippine literature and the arts, history, political and social sciences, economics, education, and environmental studies. Grants are awarded for a period of three to five months.


Candidates for the lecturing and/or research award should have the endorsement of pertinent departments of U.S. universities. Candidates for the research award who have contacts with their appropriate counterparts in U.S. educational institutions are encouraged to apply. Proposals may also be for a combination of lecturing and research. Preference is given to those without recent experience in the United States. Grants are NOT for the principal purpose of attending conferences, visiting universities or organizations, nor completing doctoral dissertations.

The award covers international travel (budget economy-ONLY for the scholar), maintenance allowance, professional development allowance, a settling-in allowance, and limited medical insurance for the successful scholar. PhD Studentship: Nursing Ethics, Ireland

Summary: Applications are being accepted for a PhD studentship in ethics to begin October 2008. The project will examine the role of emotions in nursing ethics, with particular application to moral perception and ethical decision-making.

Timeline: Deadline for applications: Monday August 25, 2008. Interviews will be arranged for early September 2008.

Eligibility: The ideal applicant should be either (i) a graduate of a philosophy, ethics, theology, psychology, literary studies, or other relevant field with a first-class or 2-I honors degree or its equivalent; or (ii) a healthcare professional with postgraduate training or other experience applicable to the project.

The student will be based in the School of Nursing at Dublin City University, Ireland. The studentship is valued at €16,000 per year (tax free) plus applicable research programme fees for three years. The project is funded by the School of Nursing (http://www.dcu.ie/nursing/) and will be supervised by Dónal O’Mathúna (http://www.dcu.ie/info/staff_member.php?id_no=1510).

The project will examine the role of emotions in nursing ethics, with particular application to moral perception and ethical decision-making. A theoretical and philosophical analysis of relevant literature will be conducted to develop a framework for ethical decision-making in nursing that provides an appropriate balance between emotional and cognitive dimensions. The project will also explore the role of literary narratives (broadly defined) in ethics training for nurses. The project should also address methods of assessing the impact of narratives on ethical decision-making.

Applications must include a cover letter explaining why you wish to pursue a PhD in ethics, a curriculum vitae, a sample of your written work and at least two letters of recommendation.

Fulbright: Advanced Research and University Lecturing Awards in the United States

Summary: The Philippine-American Educational Foundation (PAEF) will start accepting applications for advanced research and/or university lecturing awards in the United States for academic year 2009-2010.

Timeline: Completed application forms from interested and qualified faculty and researchers must be received at the PAEF office on or before October 13, 2008. Grants are awarded for a period of three to five months.

Eligibility: Eligible fields are those related to Philippine literature and the arts, history, political and social sciences, economics, education, and the environmental sciences. Candidates for the lecturing and/or research award should have the endorsement of pertinent departments of U.S. univerisities. Candidates for the research award who have contacts with their appropriate counterparts in U.S. educational institutions are encouraged to apply. Proposals may also be for a combination of lecturing and research. Preference is given to those without recent experience in the United States. Grants are NOT for the principal purpose of attending conferences, visiting universities or organizations, nor completing doctoral dissertations.

The award covers international travel (budget economy-ONLY for the scholar), maintenance allowance, professional development allowance, a settling-in allowance, and limited medical insurance for the successful scholar. A modest monthly allowance will be provided for ONE dependent (subject to the availability of funds) provided the dependent stays at least 80% of the scholar's grant duration in the U.S. Dependents of selected applicants are responsible for their own J-2 application at the U.S. Embassy. Issuance or non-issuance of a non-immigrant visa is at the discretion of the consular affairs section of the U.S. Embassy.

Postdoctoral Fellowship: Philosophy, the Netherlands

Summary: The Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Groningen has a position available for a postdoctoral fellow / researcher. Maximum salary amounts to € 3315, - per month.

Timeline: The position is awarded for a period of two years. Primary residency for the two-year period is Groningen.

Eligibility: Applicants should have recently obtained a Ph.D. (preferably cum laude) in philosophy, or in areas relating to philosophy. In addition, the applicant should be an excellent researcher who will be able to qualify at a later date for a research project funded by NWO. Woman applicants are strongly urged to apply. The Faculty consists of four departments: History of Philosophy, Practical Philosophy, Theoretical Philosophy and Ethics. PhD Scholarships: Life Sciences & Ethics, Milan

Description: The main aim of the PhD program is the creation of a class of highly skilled scholars, having both scientific and philosophical competences. The students will have to attend lectures and seminars and to write a dissertation. They will also be involved in lab activities: the will become members of one of the research groups hosted by the institution. All
lectures, seminars, and lab activities will be in English. The PhD dissertation will also have to be written in English. In addition, the students will be encouraged to write (with the help of Faculty members) research articles and to submit them for publication to important academic journals.

The students will be able to choose between two different kinds of research topics:

(i) the ethical and political issues raised by biomedical research;
(ii) the philosophical foundations of the life sciences.

The PhD will provide:

(1) training in logical, philosophical, and ethical analysis;
(2) training in molecular biomedicine and in evolutionary theory;
(3) skills to connect scientific and humanistic approaches in a productive way;
(4) the opportunity to interact with the members of an international community of scholars working on the foundations and ethics of the life sciences.

The IFOM-IEO Campus is one of the most important European centres for biomedical research. It hosts 450 researchers, 35 research groups, and 13 technological units. The campus has an extension of 24.000 square meters (50% of this are labs). It is close and well connected to the city centre (10 minutes by bus from Piazza Duomo, the very centre of Milan). Milan is at
the moment one of the most exciting and lively European cities.
